We recently met a new client who was trying to decide between a stone patio or a concrete patio for her home. And that’s a really common question we hear. Both materials have their place, and both can look beautiful and perform well—but depending on your goals, one might suit you better than the other.
Now, I’ll be honest—I love stone. Especially when it’s used in the front of a house. So that’s usually my go-to answer. There’s just something timeless and welcoming about natural stone that concrete can’t quite match, as you can see from the photos below of projects we’ve done.

- Beautiful & Timeless: Natural stone has an elegance and warmth that’s hard to beat. It gives your space a gorgeous, high-end look.
- Durable: Stone can last for decades with very little maintenance. It holds up well to the elements and doesn’t crack like plain concrete can. Our stone patios are usually built on a solid concrete base—typically 3.5 to 4 inches thick—and then we mortar the stone on top. That two-step process takes more time and skill (and more budget) than a basic concrete pour, but it makes the project incredibly durable. You can see what I mean by looking at the photos below:
- One-of-a-Kind Look: No two pieces of natural stone are exactly the same, which means your patio will have its own unique pattern, shape, texture, and with a variety of color options. It’s not something that comes off an assembly line—it’s truly custom.

Cons:
- Higher Cost: Stone patios cost more upfront, both in materials and labor.
Concrete Patios: Simple, Clean, and Budget-Friendly

- Affordable: A basic concrete patio is less expensive than stone, making it a good choice if you’re working within a tighter budget.
- Quicker Installation: If time is a factor, a concrete patio goes in faster than a stone one, since it’s usually a single pour and done.
Cons:
- Prone to Cracking: Over time, concrete can crack—especially if it’s not installed correctly or the ground underneath shifts.
- Not a High-End Look: Even with stamping and staining, concrete doesn’t quite capture the charm or timelessness of natural stone. It can look a little more basic or “builder-grade” compared to custom stonework.

If you’re looking for a patio that’s going to last a lifetime and make a bold statement—especially in your front yard—stone is probably the way to go. It’s a bigger investment up front, but it pays off in the long run in terms of beauty and durability. Custom stonework can also boost your home’s value. It adds instant charm, curb appeal, and a sense of quality that people notice right away. Buyers tend to see stone as a high-end, long-lasting upgrade—which can make your home stand out and even bump up the price when it’s time to sell.
On the other hand, if you’re focused on function, staying on budget, or you’re putting in something more temporary or in a less visible spot, concrete might make more sense.
