When we were hired for this project, the homeowners had just moved into their new home and were frustrated with the narrow, unusable backyard. They wanted a functional outdoor space but were also dealing with some serious water drainage issues that needed to be addressed first.
Tackling the Drainage Problem
The first thing we noticed when we walked into the backyard was the muddy walkway leading from the house. The stepping stones were completely surrounded by water, and it didn’t take long to figure out why. All the water from the backyard was draining into this low-lying area right next to the house—not exactly an ideal situation. Our priority was to find a solution that would not only make the space usable but also ensure the water was redirected safely away from the house.
Installing a Dry Creek Bed and Drainage System
To fix the drainage problem, we installed a drain pipe below a dry creek bed. The idea here was to capture the water running off the backyard and guide it away from the house. This not only solved the water issue but also added a nice visual feature to the landscape.
Building a Patio and Boulder Wall
Once the water was under control, we focused on transforming the space into something the homeowners could actually use. We designed a patio that stretches from the back of the house to the dry creek bed, and connects to the existing deck. Now, they have a spacious area where they can relax, entertain, or simply enjoy their yard.
To finish off the design, we added a boulder wall to cover up the exposed dirt along the edge of the patio. The boulders give the space a natural feel and also create planting pockets where the homeowners can add some greenery. It’s a great way to soften the look and bring some life to the patio area.
A Backyard Makeover
In the end, what started as a narrow, muddy strip of land with water issues has been completely transformed into a functional and inviting outdoor space. The drainage problems are gone, and now the homeowners have a gorgeous yard they can enjoy all year long.
