We have been getting several calls this year to repair pavers around swimming pools. If installed correctly, they should last several years.
However, if pavers are not applied correctly, they can shift or settle, causing water to collect around them. This attracts mosquitoes, mildew grows, and the pavers become slippery. Not to mention, they become esthetically unappealing.
It all starts with a proper base. The following explains the steps we took to repair this client’s pool pavers:
- Inspect the Damage – Identify cracked, chipped, sunken, or loose pavers. Check for underlying causes like water erosion, poor drainage, or shifting base material.

- Remove the Damaged Pavers – Us a flat-head screwdriver or pry bar to gently lift the damaged paver. Work slowly to avoid damaging surrounding pavers.

- Prepare the Base – Clear out debris and check the base layer. If the base is eroded or uneven, add sand or crushed stone, then level and compact the base.

The photo below shows how we use polymeric sand (not play sand) and granite dust, and then compact the soil and base.

- Install the New Pavers – Use a level to ensure uniformity.
- Fill the Joints – Sweep polymetric sand into the joints around the new pavers. Compact and sweep again until joints are filled.
- Set the Sand – Lightly mist the area with water to activate the polymeric sand binder. Avoid overwatering – it can wash away the sand.
