Deer-Proof Gardening: How We Built a Beautiful Garden That Deer Can’t Reach

If you garden in the North Georgia mountains, you know that there really isn’t such a thing as a completely deer-proof garden—unless you build very high walls or install an effective deer fence. As more rural areas are developed, deer continue to wander into neighborhoods looking for an easy meal.

Our client in Cleveland, Georgia, wanted a formal vegetable and flower garden that would be both beautiful and productive. The challenge? Deer were a constant problem. Our solution was to build raised brick planting beds and enclose the entire garden with an 8-foot-tall fence, creating a space where vegetables and flowers could thrive without becoming deer food.

The project began by carefully leveling the site before installing the fence posts. While the fencing was being constructed, we built three raised brick planting beds along with a narrow planting bed around the perimeter of the fence. This additional bed provides the perfect place for climbing vegetables such as beans and other vining plants to grow.

Once the planting beds were complete, we installed fresh sod throughout the garden and finished the fencing, creating a clean, organized, and attractive outdoor space.

One Year Later

A year after completion, the transformation was remarkable. The garden was thriving with healthy vegetables and beautiful flowers—and best of all, there were no deer problems.

This project proves that with thoughtful design, raised beds, and properly installed deer fencing, you can enjoy a productive and attractive garden even in areas with heavy deer populations.
